The student USITT chapter at Northwest partners with the Northwest Dance Company to design lights for their semester Dance Show. Each member is assigned a dance to design. The designer has a preview night where they can meet with the choreographer, ask questions, and watch a rehearsal. This is the only time the designer will see the dance before tech week so they have to record the full-out run at the rehearsal to design off of. The designer then meets with the programmer and the stage manager to write cues. The programmer has to be able to work with designers of all skill and experience levels because the designers range from first-time freshman designers to senior lighting design emphasis students who are on their seventh or eighth Dance Show at Northwest. The programmer additionally is the one to design the choreographers dance at the beginning, the finale number, and all of the short acts spread throughout the program. I have worked as the programmer for three Dance Shows in my time at Northwest. Below are some images from the shows that I have programmed.
